Concert venues in Budapest – what belongs in the event transfer schedule

Budapest is one of Central Europe’s liveliest concert cities: a stadium, arenas, a world-class concert hall, a historic opera house and summer open-air venues all lie within a few kilometres of each other. Each has its own transport logic – here is what is worth knowing when planning.

Puskás Aréna – District XIV, Zugló

Hungary’s largest stadium opened in November 2019, with 67,215 seats. It stands near Dózsa György út and Stefánia út, close to the city centre, and the area is served by metro line M2 and tram line 1. Here, size determines how departure is planned: at the end of a big stadium concert, a crowd the size of a medium-sized Hungarian town sets off at once, and special traffic arrangements are regularly put in place in the area for major events. That is why the pick-up point is best set a little further from the stadium, in line with the traffic arrangements in force.

Papp László Budapest Sportaréna – Stefánia út

Budapest’s classic arena opened in 2003 and holds 12,500 spectators for concerts in its largest configuration. Its immediate neighbour is the Puskás Aréna – if both venues host events on the same day, traffic in the area slows considerably, so you need to allow more travelling time and a well-considered direction of approach.

MVM Dome – District IX, Üllői út

Europe’s largest handball arena opened in December 2021, with more than 20,000 seats for handball matches; alongside sporting events it regularly hosts major concerts. It lies on Üllői út next to Népliget park, on the same route that leads to the airport – a particularly convenient location if the performer is flying on straight after the concert.

Müpa – District IX, at the Pest end of Rákóczi Bridge

The Palace of Arts, opened in 2005, houses the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, renowned for its outstanding acoustics, as well as the Festival Theatre and the Ludwig Museum. It hosts classical and jazz evenings and guest performances by international soloists and orchestras – an audience that particularly appreciates a discreet, elegant arrival.

Hungarian State Opera and Erkel Theatre

The Opera House at Andrássy út 22, designed by Miklós Ybl, opened in 1884 and welcomed audiences again in spring 2022 after a renovation lasting several years. Stopping on Andrássy út is restricted, so the drop-off and pick-up point should be agreed in advance. The Opera’s other venue, the Erkel Theatre on II. János Pál pápa tér, has one of the largest auditoriums in the country.

Events at Buda Castle Palace

The rebuilt buildings of the Buda Castle Palace Quarter – including the Main Guardhouse and the Riding Hall – host gala dinners, corporate events and receptions, while festivals, among them the Budapest Wine Festival, take place in the palace courtyards. The Castle District is a traffic-restricted zone: access and stopping arrangements are always set by the venue and the event organiser, so please send us the information you receive from the production when you request a quote.

Sziget Festival – Óbuda Island

One of Europe’s largest music festivals is held every August on Óbuda Island (Hajógyári-sziget). A festival works differently from a one-night concert: movements have to be arranged over several days with a changing schedule, and the organiser sets the rules for access to the island each year.

Budapest Park – Soroksári út

Opened in 2012, this open-air concert venue on Soroksári út, near Rákóczi Bridge, welcomes audiences from spring to autumn. Outdoors, the weather has a say in the schedule too: in the rain, the audience leaves faster and in a less orderly way. As both Müpa and Budapest Park are near the Pest end of Rákóczi Bridge, on an evening when both have events the area is even busier than usual.

Club gigs in the city centre

Smaller, club-sized concerts mostly take place in or near the city centre: the A38 ship is moored at the Buda end of Petőfi Bridge, and Akvárium Klub is beneath Erzsébet tér. The journey there is short, but stopping options nearby are limited, so it is especially important to fix the pick-up point and time precisely.
