The route
Budapest to Pécs transfer: via the M6 and M60 motorways
The journey from Budapest to Pécs is about 201 km, and in normal traffic it takes roughly two hours and thirty-five minutes. We leave the capital heading south on the M6 motorway, running parallel to the right bank of the Danube: past Érd, Dunaújváros, Paks and Szekszárd to the junction near Bóly, where the M60 motorway branches off westwards, straight towards Pécs. Today the M60 ends at Pécs; it is planned to be extended towards the Croatian border in future.
The great advantage of this route is that it is motorway the whole way, and once you are out of Budapest it is rarely congested. Passengers living in south-west Budapest or on the Buda side are taken directly towards the M6; if we set off from Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, we join the motorway via the southern section of the M0 ring road, avoiding the city centre completely.

World Heritage and cityscape
What to see in Pécs: two thousand years in one city centre
The centre of Pécs is compact and easy to explore on foot; the main sights lie between Széchenyi tér and Dóm tér, just a few minutes’ walk from one another. Your chauffeur takes you to the edge of the centre, from where you can comfortably continue on foot, and then waits for you again at the agreed place and time.
Early Christian burial chambers – UNESCO World Heritage
The Early Christian necropolis of Roman Sopianae has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The biblical wall paintings and Early Christian symbols of its 4th- and 5th-century burial chambers, chapels and mausoleum are exceptionally well-preserved examples of late Roman Christian art. The site’s main visitor attraction is the Cella Septichora Visitor Centre, built around the remains of a seven-lobed building – a floor plan extremely rare in provincial architecture.
The cathedral and Dóm tér
The four-towered Pécs Cathedral – a basilica consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul – dominates the city’s skyline. Around Dóm tér, the Bishop’s Palace, the cathedral and the World Heritage sites can all be seen on a single walk.
The Mosque of Pasha Qasim on Széchenyi tér
The main square is dominated by the Mosque of Pasha Qasim the Victorious, one of the most monumental relics of the Ottoman era in Hungary. Today it serves as a Catholic parish church, and it is a place of rare atmosphere, where the architecture of East and West meets in a single building.
Zsolnay Cultural Quarter
The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter was created on the former site of the world-famous Zsolnay porcelain factory as part of the European Capital of Culture programme. Across some five hectares, visitors will find listed buildings, the Zsolnay family mausoleum, ceramics exhibitions, a planetarium, a concert venue, galleries, cafés and craft shops. It is also a popular venue for corporate events, dinners and receptions.
The Mecsek, Misina and Tettye
Rising above the city, the Mecsek hills are Pécs’s natural viewpoint and a favourite spot for excursions. The 197-metre TV tower on Misina Peak has been the city’s landmark since 1973: a high-speed lift takes you up to the café at 72 metres and to the open viewing terrace at 80 metres, from where, on a clear day, you can see the Villány Hills and the Papuk range in Croatia. The ruin garden at Tettye above the city centre and the forest roads of the Mecsek are a short drive away – if a viewpoint fits into your day, your chauffeur will take you up to the top and wait for you again at the agreed time.
Practical tips for the city centre
Much of central Pécs is pedestrianised, so Széchenyi tér, Király utca and the area around Dóm tér are best enjoyed on foot. We take you to the edge of the centre, to the entrance of your hotel or to the door of your event venue, and wait for you at the same spot for the journey home. With plenty of luggage, older passengers or an evening programme, the difference is really noticeable: no searching for a multi-storey car park, no dragging suitcases along the cobbled streets.

Wine region and spa
Villány and Harkány: wine and healing waters in one day
The heart of the Villány wine region lies some 35 km from Pécs. Villány is home to outstanding red wines – the land of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Kékfrankos and Portugieser – and its local speciality is Villányi Franc. The Villány Wine Route was established in 1994 as Hungary’s first wine route. The rows of cellars, wine houses and vineyards among the hills draw wine lovers and corporate groups alike.
Not far from Villány, some 26 km from Pécs, lies Harkány, a well-known spa of southern Transdanubia. Harkány’s thermal water averages 62 °C, and its special feature is its sulphur content, used mainly to treat musculoskeletal complaints.
The greatest luxury of a wine tasting is that nobody has to drive. The facing seats for seven passengers in the V-Class create a sociable atmosphere even on the short hops between cellars, and chilled drinks can be provided on request.

Szekszárd

Close to Villány and Harkány stands Siklós Castle, one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the region – the ideal complement to a day in wine country.
Mohács
The Busójárás, the end-of-carnival festival of this town on the Danube, has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2009. Its date follows the end of the carnival season each year.

Starting university, visits and journeys home
Because of the University of Pécs’s international student community, a large share of trips to Pécs are family journeys: at the start of the academic year, parents accompany their children to their new city, and at the end of the exam period many travel home at the same time.
