Who is the Budapest to Košice transfer for?

The route
The Budapest–Košice route: M3, M30 and the Tornyosnémeti–Milhosť border crossing
From Budapest we head east on the M3 motorway, past Gödöllő, Gyöngyös and Mezőkövesd. Before Miskolc we join the M30, which bypasses the city and runs north all the way to the border. We cross into Slovakia at Tornyosnémeti: here the M30 flows straight into the Slovak R4 expressway, and from the border near Milhosť (Migléc) it is only about twenty kilometres to the centre of Košice.
Just a few years ago the route was not this simple. The last section of the M30, between Miskolc and the border, opened in October 2021, and since then you can travel from Budapest to Košice on motorway and expressway the whole way. Instead of the old main road winding through villages and towns, you can expect a predictable, steady journey – which matters all the more when you have a meeting or a family event at a fixed time.

When should you allow extra time?
Delays are most likely in Budapest itself and just outside the city: the outbound stretch of the M3 is regularly congested on weekday mornings and afternoons, and at the start of long weekends the whole eastern corridor is busier. If you need to be in Košice at a precise time, it is worth setting off before the rush hour and leaving a comfortable margin. We always adapt the journey time to traffic and weather – for our chauffeurs, safety comes first.
Crossing the border and travel documents
Hungary and Slovakia are both members of the Schengen Area, so there are no routine border checks between the two countries. However, the authorities can introduce temporary checks at any time, so every passenger – children included – should carry a valid identity card or passport. Slovakia uses the euro, and cards are widely accepted in shops, cafés and restaurants in the old town.
On the way: Miskolc and its surroundings
The route passes Miskolc, so your trip to Košice combines easily with a programme in northern Hungary: a meeting in Miskolc, or a visit to Diósgyőr Castle or Miskolctapolca. Two and a half hours that belong to you
In your own car, the drive to Košice is all about driving: keeping in lane, watching speed limits, the border, city traffic, hunting for a parking space on the edge of the old town. Hungarian heritage in Košice – from Rákóczi to Márai
Few cities abroad are woven so deeply into Hungarian history. For centuries Košice was one of the most important free royal towns of the Kingdom of Hungary, a centre of trade and culture in the Hornád valley. Hungarian visitors do not walk here as strangers: the names, the statues and the graves are familiar.
The resting place of Francis II Rákóczi
Prince Francis II Rákóczi lies in the crypt of St Elisabeth’s Cathedral. His remains were brought home from exile in Turkey in 1906 and laid to rest in a vault created beneath the cathedral. Buried with him are his mother, Ilona Zrínyi, his son József, and his loyal companions, among them Miklós Bercsényi and his wife, Krisztina Csáky. For many Hungarian families, the crypt is the most important stop on a trip to Košice – it deserves to be visited without haste.
The Rodosto House
The memory of the prince’s exile is kept alive by the Rodosto House: a replica of Rákóczi’s home in Rodosto, Turkey, built in Košice after his remains were returned. Today it is one of the exhibition venues of the East Slovak Museum.
Sándor Márai’s city
Sándor Márai was born in Košice in 1900, and the city’s bourgeois world comes to life in the pages of his memoir “Confessions of a Bourgeois”. If you have read it, a walk along the main street will let you rediscover the Košice of his books – the houses, the cafés, the cathedral tower.

The old town
What to see in Košice
Košice’s historic centre is built around a single long axis, the main street (Hlavná ulica). The key sights lie within a few hundred metres of each other, so a full afternoon or a relaxed morning is enough to see the highlights. Your chauffeur will take you to the edge of the pedestrian zone or right to your hotel door, so you need not worry about parking.
St Elisabeth’s Cathedral
Slovakia’s largest church and an outstanding monument of Central European Gothic, it is one of the easternmost Gothic cathedrals of Western Christianity. It is worth visiting for its richly decorated portals outside, and for its winged altarpiece and the Rákóczi crypt within.
St Michael’s Chapel and Urban’s Tower
These two medieval buildings beside the cathedral form, together with it, the best-known ensemble in the old town. The chapel originally served as an ossuary, while the free-standing bell tower was built because the cathedral’s slender spire could not have borne the weight of the great bell.
The State Theatre and the Singing Fountain
Opened in 1899, the eclectic theatre building is one of the finest on the main street. In front of it is the Singing Fountain, which comes alive with music and lights on evenings in the warmer months. On a summer evening, this is the city’s favourite meeting place.
The Immaculata statue
This Baroque plague column, erected in 1723, commemorates the end of an epidemic. It stands in the middle of the main street and makes a handy landmark as you explore.
The Košice Gold Treasure
The hoard was discovered in 1935 while the foundations of a house on the main street were being laid: 2,920 gold coins and a Renaissance gold chain more than two metres long. Since 2013 the treasure has been on permanent display at the East Slovak Museum – one of the city’s most remarkable collections.
Cafés, restaurants and evening atmosphere
Cafés, patisseries and restaurants line the entire length of the main street. It is easy to break up your sightseeing with a long lunch, and in the evening the terraces and illuminated façades set the mood. If your day ends with dinner, we simply time your journey home to match.

Košice is the economic centre of eastern Slovakia. For decades the city’s industrial profile has been shaped by its long-established steelworks, one of the largest steel producers in Central Europe; from October 2026 it passes into the direct ownership of Japan’s Nippon Steel. The two scenarios below are not timetables, just starting points: they show how the two-and-a-half to three-hour journey fits into the rhythm of a business day or a cultural trip. We always tailor the exact times to your own schedule.
A return business day
An early-morning departure from Budapest, ahead of the rush hour on the way out of the city. On the way, final calls and a run-through of your presentation. Arrival in Košice in the late morning, right at the entrance to your meeting venue. Lunch with your partners in the old town, then a short meeting or site visit in the afternoon. Departure for home in the late afternoon – all that remains is to sort your notes or rest a little, and you are home for dinner.
A cultural weekend
Leave early on Friday afternoon and arrive at your hotel in the late afternoon, then take an evening stroll along the illuminated main street and dine on a terrace. On Saturday, the cathedral and the Rákóczi crypt, followed by the East Slovak Museum and its gold treasure. On Sunday morning, the Rodosto House and a coffee in Márai’s footsteps, then the journey home in the early afternoon, leaving time to recover before the week begins.
