Győr and Sopron – transfers from Budapest to western Hungary

Győr and Sopron are two faces of the same western gateway. Győr is one of Hungary’s strongest industrial cities, with a university, a Baroque centre and the meeting of three rivers; Sopron is the “most loyal town”, with a medieval old town, Kékfrankos vineyards and the World Heritage landscape of Lake Fertő, barely an hour from Vienna. Our Győr and Sopron transfers from Budapest run on direct motorways and expressways to both – the only difference is that we get you to Győr in an hour and a half and to Sopron in two and a half.
Route and journey time
Budapest to Győr and Budapest to Sopron transfers: M1 and M85
Győr is about 124 km from Budapest, and in normal traffic the journey takes roughly an hour and twenty-five minutes. The whole route follows the M1 motorway westwards, past Tatabánya and Tata. This is one of Hungary’s busiest international routes – the same road continues to Hegyeshalom and on to Vienna – so at peak times, especially on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, expect heavier traffic on the roads out of Budapest and at the start of the M1.
Sopron is about 219 km from Budapest, a journey of roughly two and a half hours. We take the M1 as far as Győr, then join the M85 expressway, which runs via Csorna all the way to Sopron. The M85 opened in stages; the final section serving the north of Sopron, with the Bécsi-domb tunnel, opened in December 2024. Since then Sopron can be reached by expressway, bypassing the town centre, and the town has gained a more direct link towards the Austrian border as well.

A stop on the way: Tata
On the M1, roughly halfway to Győr, lies Tata, the “town of waters”. The castle on the shore of the Öreg-tó lake, the lakeside promenade and the English landscape park make a pleasant stop on a longer journey west – for a coffee, a short walk or even a business lunch. If your schedule allows, your chauffeur drops you at the agreed spot and waits for you at the time you specify.

Airport transfers to Győr and Sopron
International guests heading for Győr or Sopron can choose between two airports: Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) and Vienna Airport (Schwechat) are both worth considering. From Budapest the transfer is simple: with our Meet & Greet service, your chauffeur welcomes you in person in the arrivals hall with a name sign, walks you to the car and drives you to your address in Győr or Sopron. Győr
Győr: the car industry, a university and a Baroque city centre
In international business circles, Győr’s name is closely linked with Audi. Founded in 1993, Audi Hungaria is today the world’s largest powertrain plant: in 2025 it produced more than one and a half million engines and electric drives for Volkswagen Group factories, and the Audi Q3, the Q3 Sportback and the CUPRA Terramar are built in Győr. At the end of 2025 the company employed more than 11 thousand people, making it the region’s largest employer.
A plant on this scale generates constant professional traffic: suppliers, auditors, engineers and executives arrive in Győr, often straight from the airport. For them, a Point to Point transfer is the most comfortable option – they can work and make calls on the back seat during the journey, and step out at the specified gate or reception.
Széchenyi István University
Győr is also a university city: Széchenyi István University is one of Hungary’s centres for engineering and automotive engineering education, with close ties to industry. We take guests arriving for conferences, research collaborations and graduation ceremonies to the campus and back.
Baroque centre, Káptalandomb and rivers
The centre of Győr is one of the finest Baroque old towns in Hungary: Széchenyi tér, the balconied houses of the pedestrian streets and Káptalandomb (Chapter Hill), where the cathedral keeps the herm reliquary of Saint Ladislaus. The city lies at the confluence of the Mosoni-Duna, the Rába and the Rábca – no wonder it is called the city of rivers. On a peninsula at the edge of the centre, where the Mosoni-Duna meets the Rába, stands Győr’s thermal and leisure spa (RQ Water Park and Thermal Spa, still known to many as Rába Quelle) – a pleasant place to unwind after a long day of meetings.

A World Heritage Site near Győr
Pannonhalma Archabbey
South-east of Győr, on a hilltop, stands the Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma, one of Hungary’s most important religious and cultural landmarks. The monastery was founded in 996 and is still home to a Benedictine community; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Construction of the Basilica of St Martin began in 1224, and its ornamental red-marble doorway, the Porta Speciosa, is particularly beautiful. The library, built between 1824 and 1835, holds more than 350,000 volumes, and the archabbey is also the keeper of the founding charter of Tihany Abbey from 1055 – one of the oldest written records of the Hungarian language.

Sopron
Sopron: the most loyal town
Sopron holds a special place in Hungarian history. On 14 December 1921 its residents voted in a referendum on whether to belong to Hungary or Austria; some 65 per cent of voters chose Hungary. That is why Sopron was given the title “Civitas Fidelissima” – the most loyal town – and why 14 December is celebrated as the Day of Loyalty.
The Firewatch Tower and the Gate of Loyalty
The symbol of the town is the Firewatch Tower rising above the centre; at its foot, the Gate of Loyalty commemorates the referendum. The tower offers fine views over the old town and the surrounding hills.
A medieval old town
With the medieval and Baroque houses of Fő tér and its narrow, winding streets, Sopron is one of the best-preserved historic towns in Hungary.
The capital of Kékfrankos
The Sopron wine region is synonymous with Kékfrankos. Cellar visits, wine tastings, dinner at a wine house – with a chauffeur, all of it is carefree.
On the border
Sopron lies some 60 km from Vienna; the main road border crossing is Sopron–Klingenbach. The town is at once Hungarian and Central European.
Lővérek, the university and wellbeing
For decades, the wooded, villa-dotted hillside of Lővérek above the town has been a place for rest and recovery: hotels, a sanatorium tradition, clean air and walking trails await visitors here. Sopron is also a university town – the University of Sopron is a long-established centre for forestry and wood-industry education, whose predecessor moved here from Selmecbánya in 1919. We take guests arriving for university events, professional conferences or a restful week in Lővérek right to the entrance of their accommodation.
The wineries of the Sopron wine region line the area around the town and the shore of Lake Fertő; other varieties grow here alongside Kékfrankos, but it was this grape that built the region’s reputation. We plan a wine-tasting afternoon so that the short hops between cellars are comfortable too, and guests arrive straight at their accommodation at the end of the day.
Trips to Sopron are many and varied: business negotiations at a company near the border, a university event, medical travel, a wine-country weekend or a family visit. On the two-and-a-half-hour journey from Budapest you can rest or work comfortably on the back seat, and on arrival there is no need to look for a parking space in the narrow streets of the centre.
UNESCO World Heritage
The Fertő landscape and Esterházy Palace in Fertőd
The Fertő/Neusiedlersee cultural landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 – a site shared by Hungary and Austria. For thousands of years the lake and its surroundings have been a meeting place of different cultures; the cultural landscape includes Esterházy Palace in Fertőd, the Széchenyi Mansion in Nagycenk with its double lime avenue more than two kilometres long, and the Fertőrákos quarry. Lake Fertő is Europe’s westernmost steppe lake, with a rich birdlife.
Esterházy Palace in Fertőd is an outstanding example of 18th-century Baroque-Rococo architecture, with a French Baroque garden; the Esterházy court was once a musical centre renowned throughout Europe. The palace still hosts concerts and events – exactly the kind of occasion when guests from Budapest particularly appreciate not having to drive home in the evening.

Concerts, galas and events in western Hungary
Győr and Sopron have a rich cultural life: theatre and ballet performances, concerts, festivals and palace events follow one after another. Győr and Sopron are unusual in having two neighbouring capitals close by. From Sopron, Vienna is some 60 km away, and Bratislava is easy to reach from Győr. That is why the plans of guests who work in or visit the western region often do not stop at the border: a morning meeting in Győr and an afternoon meeting in Vienna, or a weekend in Sopron followed by a flight home from Vienna Airport.

Useful information for cross-border journeys
- Hungary and Austria are both members of the Schengen Area, but passengers must always carry a valid travel document.
- There are several border crossings around Sopron; besides the larger ones, some smaller crossings have weight restrictions or are open only to pedestrians and cyclists – we plan the route accordingly.
- If your programme ends in Vienna, please give us the destination address in Vienna or your flight details when you book.
