The road to the Tisza
Budapest to Szeged transfer on the M5 motorway
Of all Hungary’s major cities, Szeged is one of the easiest to reach from Budapest. The distance is about 171 km, and in normal traffic the journey takes roughly an hour and fifty-five minutes. We leave the capital heading south on the M5 motorway, pass Kecskemét and Kiskunfélegyháza, and reach the outskirts of Szeged just after Kistelek. The M5 continues to the Röszke border crossing, the exit towards Serbia – irrelevant for most travellers to Szeged, but a reminder that the city lies right beside Hungary’s southern border.
Because the drive is short, Szeged is ideal for a day trip: a morning meeting and a return in the afternoon, or a late-afternoon departure for an evening performance and a return home that night. We always time your departure around the start of your programme in Szeged, allowing for rush-hour traffic on the roads out of Budapest.

University of Szeged
The University of Szeged is one of Hungary’s leading universities, with strong faculties of medicine, science and humanities. Its best-known figure is Albert Szent-Györgyi, who researched and taught in Szeged from 1930 to 1945, served as the university’s rector in 1940–41, and received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1937 for his work on vitamin C. BYD, the Chinese carmaker, is building its first European passenger car plant near Szeged. What to see in Szeged: Dóm tér, the Tisza riverside and Art Nouveau
Modern Szeged was shaped by the great flood of 1879: the city was almost entirely destroyed, and its centre – laid out with ring roads and radial avenues, full of eclectic and Art Nouveau buildings – was born during the rebuilding. That is why the city centre feels so harmonious and elegant, and it is well worth setting aside a few hours for it.
Dóm tér and the Votive Church
Szeged Cathedral – officially the Votive Church – was built between 1913 and 1930 to designs by Frigyes Schulek and Ernő Foerk, fulfilling a vow made after the flood. Its towers rise 91 metres, and it is the only cathedral in Hungary built in the 20th century. Dóm tér in front of the church covers some 12,000 square metres; here stands the Dömötör Tower, the oldest building in the city, and beneath the arcades surrounding the square is the National Pantheon, with memorial plaques and statues of great figures from Hungarian history and culture.
Móra Ferenc Museum
This neoclassical building on Roosevelt tér, beside the Tisza, opened in 1896. The museum’s archaeological, ethnographic, natural-history and fine-art collections are among the richest in the region, and it is particularly famous for its Hun-era gold treasures.
Art Nouveau Szeged: the Reök Palace and more
The decades of rebuilding after the flood coincided with the heyday of Art Nouveau, which is why Szeged is today one of the richest cities in Hungary for Art Nouveau architecture. The best-known example is the Reök Palace on Tisza Lajos körút, designed by Ede Magyar and completed in 1907: with its undulating façade and floral ornamentation it is one of the most photographed buildings in the city, and today it hosts exhibitions and cultural events. On a stroll through the centre you will spot many more Art Nouveau apartment buildings and palaces – so do look up.
The Tisza riverside, Széchenyi tér and the university quarter
The riverside promenade along the Tisza, the landscaped Széchenyi tér and the area around the town hall make for the most pleasant walk. The university buildings and the cafés of the centre give the city a lively, student atmosphere – even more so during term time than in summer.

Szeged Open-Air Festival: an evening performance and a late-night ride home
The Szeged Open-Air Festival is one of Hungary’s most prestigious summer theatre events. The first performance was held on 13 June 1931 on Dóm tér, in front of the newly consecrated Votive Church; ever since, the monumental stage sets and the church façade have together created a backdrop with few equals in Europe. The 2026 season was dedicated to the festival’s 95th anniversary. Performances take place during the summer months; always check the organisers’ official website for the current programme and dates.
Open-air performances usually begin in the evening and end late at night. Coming from Budapest, you have two options: book a room in Szeged, or travel home the same night. In the latter case, it is especially valuable not to have to drive yourself after a long day and an uplifting evening.

Fish soup, paprika, salami – the flavours of Szeged
Szeged’s name is linked the world over with paprika and halászlé, the famous fisherman’s soup. Szeged-style fish soup is the classic dish of the riverside fish restaurants on the Tisza, and many of our guests deliberately plan a lunch in Szeged to taste it where it originated. Excursions around Szeged
Ópusztaszer and the Southern Great Plain
North of Szeged, not far from the Kistelek junction of the M5 motorway, lies the Ópusztaszer National Heritage Park. Its best-known attraction is the Feszty Panorama: painted in 1893–94 by Árpád Feszty and his assistants, this 120-metre-long panoramic painting depicts the arrival of the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin. The park also offers an open-air ethnographic collection, the Árpád Memorial and exhibitions on the era of the Hungarian conquest.
Ópusztaszer fits perfectly into a Budapest–Szeged journey: a stop of a few hours on the way there or back can become the cultural highlight of the day – especially for international guests keen to learn about the beginnings of Hungarian history.

Graduations, moving in and family visits
In a university city, the most important moments of the year are often family occasions: moving into a hall of residence or a rented flat in September, a summer graduation, a doctoral ceremony at the university. At times like these the whole family sets off – grandparents, brothers and sisters, plenty of luggage and a celebratory day that nobody wants to spend on the stress of driving or searching for a parking space.

Summer: festival season
During the Open-Air Festival the city centre fills up in the evenings and hotels are in demand. If you are coming for a performance, book early and allow for heavier pedestrian traffic around Dóm tér.
Autumn and spring: conferences
Scientific events, examinations and thesis defences cluster during the academic year. At these times, morning departures from Budapest to Szeged are the most sought after.
Weekday mornings
Traffic on the roads out of Budapest is slower at rush hour, so before a fixed-start programme in Szeged we set off with time to spare.
Friday afternoons
With weekend traffic heading out, the M5 can be busier too; if possible, it is worth leaving earlier or later.
